When Macy
was three weeks old; Teddy had a health scare that landed him in
the hospital for almost a week. Ashlee had taken Macy overnight Saturday the 4th
of May and that night Teddy started coughing and could not sleep; it seemed
like he was getting a cold. I did the nebulizer treatment as I had in the past
but Monday he started getting worse and worse and by Tuesday afternoon his
breathing was very labored; it was not until after I took his shirt off that I
realized how deep his retractions were and knew that I needed to take him in;
my doctor’s office was close to closing and so I called and they said if I was
worried about his breathing, I needed to take him to the emergency room.
I
called my husband who was actually on his way home from work; he asked if I
could wait for him to get home and I said yes. I called my friend Wende and she
said I could drop off Macy on our way. My husband is normally the calm one but
when he saw Teddy he got nervous and asked him he could speed; I said that was
fine but just don’t be reckless; we dropped baby girl off and my friend who is
nurse practitioner said to hurry. We have a new children’s hospital about 25
minutes north of us, so we headed that way. We got there and they brought us
right back into the big trauma room; they hooked him up and ran tests;
they said normally when someone is breathing the way he was, it means they do
not have enough oxygen. But his levels were fine, which was good to hear but
now we needed to find out why he was having such a hard time breathing. They
gave him a shot of a steroid and had a respiratory therapist come down and give
him some epinephrine; they said the airway should open up with those two
things; it helped for about twenty minutes but then got labored again. They did
a second round of the eppi treatment and it helped again for a little while but
then turned worse again. They told us they were going to keep him overnight to
observe.
My sister works at this hospital on the clinic side, so she came down
for a little while with us; and then she left to get baby girl and be with her
for the night; it ended up being a long night but by the morning he seemed to
be doing a little better; they let us leave around noon. I made an appointment
with our pediatrician for Thursday morning and came home.
Wednesday he was not
himself, just laid around and rested; he still was not breathing 100% but was
not as bad as it had been. The night ended up being so long; I slept on the
couch with Teddy the whole night and by morning his cough was back and so was
his labored breathing; I called the doctors office and asked if I could take
him in earlier then our 10am apt.
When I got there they gave him another shot
of a steroid and we waited; he did not get better so they had me go to the
hospital again. The doctor there asked if he could have swallowed something and
had a block in his airway; I said maybe but I had been with him most of the
time and did not think he had; they did some x-rays but found nothing. They
admitted us again and put an IV in and ran some tests. Thursday night was long
again in the hospital and so was Friday; they did some acid reflux tests and
other things but really the only conclusion was that he had a bad case of croup;
which is a respiratory condition that is usually triggered by an acute viral
infection of the upper airway; they said he might have had a secondary viral
infection of the trachea because normally the treatments work and they are not
admitted to the hospital.
The reason why we had to stay was because they drugs
they administer can only be done in the hospital; my husband stayed with him
Friday night and I took the baby and then we got to come home on Saturday

It took him a while to come around but now it’s been 5 months and he has not had anything but a few colds since. So grateful for those that helped my little boy get better
